Burger Styles

Burger Styles
There are many different types and styles of hamburger. While I don't feel the need to go into the marvellous detail outlined at www.aht.seriouseats.com I do feel the need to make a couple of distinctions.
  1. The Fast Food Burger: I think we all know what this comprises #McDonalds #crap
  2. The Fast Food Style Burger:This can be any smallish burger that can be cooked quickly and easily picked up and eaten with the hands. The patties are generally about 3 to 4oz and can be doubled up. What distinguishes these burgers from the fast food burgers from which they are derived is usually the preparation, the ingredients or both. These burgers are made from great quality fresh ingredients, the patties are never frozen and are cooked to order. This is what we now serve at Wannaburger.
  3. Gastropub Burgers: These are usually fairly large - a 7 or 8oz patty would be the norm. The ingredients will be of a good quality, fresh and cooked to order. The large bun - probably sourdough, coupled with additional toppings may mean that cutlery is required. The burger will take 15-20 minutes to cook and will be served on a plate. If this is what you are after then please try one of our sister restaurants - The Cambridge Bar or The Caley Sample Room.
  4. Gourmet (or as AHT put it "Fancypants") Burgers: These are similar to pub burgers but there is usually a huge range of different and exotic toppings. Price is relevant - think £7 for a cheeseburger with no sides.
There is a definite perception in the UK that no burger served in the fast food style can be anything other than rubbish. If it isn't the size of a house and served on a china plate then you are as well to be in McDonalds. Come on! Burgers were designed to be eaten by hand and it is the quality and make up of the ingredients that makes a good burger not the size or how it is presented. Fast Food Style Burgers offer people a quality alternative to the fast food junk - it's not about being pretentious or upmarket it's about doing something properly.
